Favorite Links: Vintage Mother’s Day

It’s almost Mother’s Day…do you have something special planned?

I found this image in the Shorpy Historical Photo Archives.  I love everything about it…from the trio in the foreground to the child scampering down the alley in the background. Do you think the sister is going to share?

To mothers everywhere, have a wonderful weekend. For my first Mother’s Day, I get to spend it with both my son and my mother. I can’t wait.

I thought I’d share one of my favorite blog posts about motherhood, from the always wonderful Pia Jane Bijkerk. Also, a shout out to my own mother’s eponymous blog, lanietankard.wordpress.com.

The L.A. Times has an article on Famous Moms Through History. Her choice of which moms to include is a little skewed to modern celebrity, but it’s an interesting read.

Simple Joy: Swinging in the Park

Yesterday I walked two blocks to our neighborhood park with my son. For the first time in years, I sat in a swing and enjoyed the simple childhood pleasure of flying through the air.

It was amazing.

We move through our adult lives at high speed. Sometimes it’s nice to take a few minutes to reconnect with an earlier, more carefree version of yourself. What are your favorite simple pleasures from childhood?

Simple Joy: Ibarra Mexican Hot Chocolate

Have you ever had Mexican-style hot chocolate? My favorite brand growing up was Ibarra. It was always a treat when my mom would take a couple of squares and drop them into a pot of boiling milk on the stove. First the scent permeates the room. Then…*finally*…you get your first spicy sip.

Today I’m feeling nostalgic. I’ve been thinking about childhood experiences in relation to my son, and reflecting on those that I want to make sure I pass on. Ibarra hot chocolate is a small, but important sensory touchstone that I want him to have. What are your favorite childhood experiences – big or small – that you’d want to pass on?

Cheers, Amy
